Rare Latin American Materials Accessible to Visitors Off-site

Beginning tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 6), library users will be able to access the rare materials of the Latin American Library at Howard-Tilton's off site facility at 900 S. Jefferson Davis Parkway, which is located about two miles from Tulane's uptown campus. These materials were moved off site over the summer as a special precaution in advance of the Howard-Tilton 5th and 6th floor construction.

An area within the off site facility has been furnished as the Off-site Latin American Library (OLAL), which will be staffed Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Access to materials at the OLAL will be by appointment only. Researchers who wish to visit the OLAL should contact Latin American Library staff by noon of the previous day via e-mail at LAL@tulane.edu (preferred) or call the main Latin American Library office phone line (504) 865-5681. To arrange Monday visits, please notify staff by the previous Friday at 4:00 pm.

For directions from the uptown campus see the map above. Ample parking in available along the perimeter of the building. Tulane parking permits are not needed. Researchers who arrive in the morning are welcome to stay until closing (4:30 pm). For those who pack a lunch, the facility includes a lounge area with tables and chairs separate from the reading room.

In addition, the library will provide transportation to and from the OLAL on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. See the schedule below.

12:00 pm – Leave OLAL; Arrive at Uptown Campus at 12:15 pm
12-1:30 pm – OLAL closed for lunch

4:30 pm – Leave OLAL; Arrive at Uptown Campus at 4:45 pm

Group visits and classroom sessions involving these special collections will continue as in the past (and can be scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays). Instructors should contact LAL@tulane.edu at least two weeks in advance to arrange a group visit or session.

Project Purpose

Howard-Tilton Memorial Library is located on the uptown campus of Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, and in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 its lowest level filled with more than eight feet of water, which caused severe damage to the building while submerging its basement collections. The nearby Joseph M. Jones Memorial Building (Jones Hall), which houses the library’s Special Collections division, sustained major flood damage also, in the lowest level of its library stacks core.

Flooded in the Howard-Tilton building were its music library and very large collections of government documents, newspapers, and microforms. Other areas destroyed included a large area of overflow shelving for general collections and two areas for closed collections storage: one for books waiting for special cataloging and for art and photography titles requiring a secure location; the other for older science materials. Much of the shelving in the basement of the Howard-Tilton building was compact or high-density shelving that accommodated a maximum number of shelves within the spaces used for them. In Jones Hall the flooded stacks core area was packed with closely arranged shelves that housed rare collections.

In the Howard-Tilton building alone more than 700,000 books and recordings were submerged underwater, as were nearly 1.5 million individual pieces of microform. In Jones Hall another 700,000 or so manuscript folders and other archival items were also flooded. The remarkable collections salvage, recovery, and rebuilding effort that followed can be seen as part of an overall library recovery that this next stage of building remediation--a 5th and 6th floor addition atop the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library--will help to complete.
